“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” – Greek Proverb and perfect example of the “leave it better than you found it” mindset.
Nordstrom, the department store, is known to many as the pinnacle of customer service.
Bruce Nordstrom, a grandson of Nordstrom’s Founder, wrote a book titled “Leave It Better Than You Found It”. The book documents the history of the Nordstrom company and details the customer service culture of Nordstrom.
I used to work at Nordstrom, I’ve read the book, and attribute much of my customer service skills to customer service skills I developed at Nordstrom.
To me, “leave it better than you found it” means as you work, ensure you’re making it possible and easier for the next person to perform their task. It also means being conscious and caring about everything you touch – literally, physically, and spiritually.
“Leave it better than you found it” can be applied to pretty much anything in life but let’s focus for a second on how this phrase can directly affects your mental clarity.
A quick way to improve mental clarity is to focus on cleanliness – further – how you leave things behind. Develop certain habits –
For starts –
- Make your bed. Everyday. Conducting your day at home is so much better with a made bed. Your bedroom will feel a whole lot cleaner and have an energetic flow. Plus, we all know that at the end of the day, getting in a bed that’s made is way nicer than getting in a messy one.
- Make sure every night before you go to sleep, the dishes are done. To me, my morning ritual is the most important part of my day. Starting the day with a clean kitchen is a must for maintaining mental clarity through the morning.
- Take the time to properly care for your clothing. Invest and own only clothes you love and learn how to fold and store all your clothes with care. If you do, even the cheapest F21 or Target items will last forever.
- One investment for the home that you will not regret is a nice vacuum. We waited for Black Friday and scored a deal on the Dyson D7. With our wood floors, this vacuum is a dream – way worth the money.
All of these tasks ultimately create cleanliness and organization which result in heightened awareness of your immediate environment.
I know that was a big sentence so in closing I’ll just say – think about it – “leave it better than you found it.” What does that mean to you?
